It should also be emphasized that the learning tools and the reasoning skills which follow are not directed solely to an educational context or a particular area of subject matter. Those tools and skills are universal and apply to personal interactions and every day problems as well. Thus, the matters addressed in this book can be helpful to people of all ages and all educational levels.
Once the learning tools and reasoning skills have been adopted and mastered, the methodology for critical thinking can be presented. As used in this context, the term critical thinking means “to understand and reason with discernment. That approach is best suited to facilitate the application of what we know and understand to what we do no know or may not understand. These vital topics shall be explained in greater depth following the chapters dedicated to learning tools and reasoning skills.
And finally, a word concerning what this book is not about is required. Many books about critical thinking deal almost exclusively with the subject of argumentation. That will not be emphasized here. The reason is simple: critical thinking is what one does before any argument begins. In other words, the process which is the subject of this book includes the intellectual faculties required to reach defensible conclusions based upon clear understanding and methodical reasoning.
